Hide column in SharePoint custom list based on values

There are certain requirements when creating new item in the SharePoint custom list user has to hide certain columns based on other value. There are two different ways to achieve it.

Server side
Client side

In Server side, we need to write our WebPart and add the webpart to the new form of the list and close the default one. In this you have full control of the controls and life cycle. But the pain will in the deployment and maintaining the code. Advantage is we have full control and the webpart and flexibility to achieve any kind of validations.

In Client side, it can be achieved using Javascript, especially using the Jquery. I'm big fan of JQuery and I'll be using the second option to achieve it in this blog.

Edit the new form and add CEWP to the form
Change the chrome state to none, we don't want to see the webpart title it's meant to invisible to the end users.
In the HTML view of the CEWP, add the below code snippet.
Change the HideColumn funtion parameters based on your columns in the custom list.

That's it try to add new item to the list, and based on the column values the other column will get hidden in the code I have used check box and text field. Based on check box I'm deciding here whether to show or hide the column.

Use Blogger Page links as label filter

In blogger, when user desires to add the link of posts specific to label in the page navigation.
Use the below code in the page html, enclosed with the script tag.

Change the URL as per requirements. Whenever user clicks on the page link it will redirect to the specific label filter page specified in the script. It also handles mobile layouts too.

Upload the necessary scripts and css to the document library.
In case of extending the Out of box form, you can upload the scripts and css files to the document library, and make sure that necessary access permissions are given to the users. If you trying to use the SPEx on your custom WebPart its better to add them in the layouts and package it as part of the WSP.

Term Store Management not visible in Site settings

When you are done with your installation, you might have noticed that “Term Store Management” link is not visible in the site settings page. You’ll be not able to find the suitable feature also in the features page.

SharePoint 2010 Social Ratings – Part 2

In Part 1, we have seen how to use the SharePoint 2010 Social ratings in lists. In this post we will try to change the SharePoint ratings icons to custom icons. In SharePoint 2010 classic five star has been used for the ratings, and these image path are stored in the Site properties.

Below list shows the properties and the image icons.

In order to change the icons, we need to edit these properties with the new image icons. For that we need little help from the graphics team or knowledge of image editing software to create new rating icons. Make sure the images are matching exact size specifications as the original.
Below are the four images which I have created.

We will upload the new images, to site assets or any other site library. Next, we will use SharePoint designer 2010 to edit the site properties to reflect the new image icon path.

Open the site in SharePoint Designer 2010
Click the site options from the ribbon menu

Rename the existing properties as below, to be used to when the default icons has to be reverted.
Create new properties as mentioned below, with the path where the new icons were uploaded.

We need to perform an IISRESET or app pool recycle, after completing the above items to the new icons to get in effect. It will look like below after the changes are made. I was not able to capture the hover effect on the screen grab. Need to capture it on the screen cast I think. Anyways Isn’t it cool?

I was trying to access SharePoint 2010 REST services in a Windows 7 machine, and face the below error message.

After some binging was able to get a Service update, which solved the issue.

Now, I’m able to proceed with the REST.

SharePoint 2010 Social Ratings – Part 1

SharePoint 2010 provides new feature to users to rate the site content list items like documents, blogs, tasks, discussion items etc. It’s available only with SharePoint 2010 and not with the Windows Foundation Services.

Lets see how to use the rating feature. I will use social rating on the discussion board list in this article, but the procedure remains same for the rest of the lists.

Follow the below steps to enable rating.

1. Enable Ratings Feature, It’s a hidden site feature, make sure it’s activated.

To activate using PowerShell : Open SharePoint 2010 Management Shell and type the below

2. Enable Ratings on the list by using the List Settings >> Rating Settings

3. Select “Yes” on the, Allow items in the list to be rated option.

4. Rating (0-5), Rating Average columns gets added to the list, and in corresponding views.

5. Start rating on the discussion board item. The same procedure applies for other lists also.

Why my ratings are not getting reflected instantly?

Ratings works with the help of the two timer jobs listed below

User Profile Service - Social Data Maintenance Job
User Profile Service - Social Rating Synchronization Job

These two timer jobs are responsible for synchronizing rating values between the Social Database and the Content Database. By default it’s configured on default interval. Change the interval to desired minutes will allow the timer job run more frequently and synchronize the rating data quickly.

Document Library “Open with Explorer” from custom WebPart

Today, some one posted in MSDN forums a question regarding, opening the pre defined document library in an Explorer mode from the custom WebPart.

Option, which is available with the ribbon menu of the library.
This can be achieved using below, by using the NavigateHttpFolder function in the core.js

NavigateHttpFolder('http:\u002f\u002fServerName:portno\u002fsitename\u002fdoclibraryname','_blank');

This method takes hex encoded URL and frameTarget as the parameters.
It worked for SharePoint 2010 and MOSS 2007 in IE8 and Firefox browsers.

Error:
The referenced assembly "Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime" could not be resolved because it has a dependency on "System.Web, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" which is not in the currently targeted framework ".NETFramework,Version=v4.0,Profile=Client". Please remove references to assemblies not in the targeted framework or consider retargeting your project.

Fix:
When you get the above error, it means that in your project your pointing to .net framework 4.0 and its not installed in your machine. Now, change the project properties to point out available framework in your machine.

Installation of SharePoint 2010 in Client OS

I successfully installed SharePoint 2010 in my laptop. I was not a calk walk, had to really spend some time in trouble shooting some issues. Initially I had issue in finding the PID for the SharePoint 2010 beta. Later it struck in my mind and checked my live ID inbox and found that the PIDs have been mailed to me.

Another issue was with the pre requisite installations, it failed to install. Even after lot of binging also, not able to find the problem. Then I started installing those manually one by one. Then faced the error not able to create the configuration database while running the configuration wizard. So reinstalled the SQL 2008 express edition again. One main thing to be noted after these installation of prerequisite framework and KB hot fixes is to restart the machine.

One more issue which took lot of my time “Failed to create sample data”, quiet puzzled with these one since I have followed all the approaches mentioned in the forums and MVP blogs. Only one thing I had missed that running the below

SharePoint Property Bag

Property bag is a feature available in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Its nothing but a hash table of Key-Value pairs. It allows to add properties to objects in a SharePoint site.

Why to Use SharePoint Property Bag

The Property Bag hash table for a site can store any metadata as Key-Value pairs such as connection strings, server names, file paths, and other settings needed by your SharePoint application. Most of the time we will store the above settings in configuration file, which is common to the entire web application. If there is any setting specific each and individual sites in the web application, then we have maintain that many entries in the config file. To over come the above scenario we can use the SharePoint Property Bag.

There is no specific out of box user interface available to set or to read the property bag settings. In WSS 3.0 property bag values has to set/get using the object model. There is an option available in SharePoint designer to set/get the property bag settings. Go to Site -> Site Settings. click on the Parameters tab. On this tab, you will be able to manipulate of all of your custom property bag values.

Interesting fact on ows_created_x0020_by property mapping

I was working with Advance search and wondering that Created By is not yielding any search results. After searching I found this information from one blog site.

Its also advised to use “Author” property instead of “Created By”.

Some one posted saying that its solved in SP2, and in some blog sites its mentioned mapping against office(4), I have not tried these approaches. I’ll update once its solved.

Update:

It work like charm, just update the “Created By” property with the Office(4) mapping, and don’t forget to do at least an incremental crawl.

Remove “Send To” from ECB Menu

I faced a situation where I need to remove the Send To menu item from the ECB menu. I binged (Search using Bing) and found lot of blog post to remove the items from the ECB. Most of them are suggesting to have a copy of Core.js and remove the menu items in the new version of renamed core.js file. Refer the new copied version of core.js in the master page.

I found another way of doing this by adding the below line of script to a content editor web part in the item list page or in master page.

The reason behind this is, the concept of “Nice guys finish last” which is followed by most in managing the project. It drives me crazy, and its totally unpleasant. It will set a false expectation to your team. If you are a manager and assigning a task to someone if he/she finishes it on time then it doesn’t mean that every time that the given task is simple. Never quantify the nature of work based on the time spent on that. Always rely on the result and rewrite your perception “Nice guys brings best results”.

Sticky posts in SharePoint Discussion boards

If you have used SharePoint discussion board in your team site, then you would have wondered that there is no option to make the post as sticky. By default SharePoint doesn't provide this facility, but it can be acheived easily with the out of box options available with the Discussion board list. After making this changes the discussion board will look like below. Step 1 Create a Column in the list

Goto the list settings and create column.

Name the column as "Sticky", and choose as checkbox (Yes/No). We are going to give the option to the owner of the post, while creating the post whether it should be set as sticky or not.

Step 2 Create a View for Sticky posts

Goto the settings page and create the view and name its as "Sticky", set is as public view

Another important thing in the Sticky view is changing the sort columns. First sort coumn should be "Sticky", that is the intention of having the sticky posts. Sticky posts should be always shown on the top and then followed by the Last updated posts. So set the "Then sort by column" to Last Updated column. as indicated below. Step 3 Selecting the Sticky view

Whereever we are showing the discussion board, that is the List View webpart. Click on modify share webpart menu and change the selected view to "Sticky" which we created in Step 2.

Now we have the Discussion board ready with the Sticky option.

All the posts which are marked as sticky will be shown on top always.

Recently, I got a mail from my collegue describing a problem in SharePoint search.

Issue : We have a portal on MOSS 2007. Documents are standard office document types to pdf etc. I have a very unique situation during a search. Find attached ppts. One is pptx, and other ppt ( 97- 2003) , content wise both are same. When searching for “Case study I” it lists both ppt’s, but when searching for autoparts (this autoparts is content within a textboxin the ppt , slide 2), it lists only pptx. I cant figure out the reason for this behavior, any suggestions. In fact, any keyword provided from the content in slide 2 does not bring the 97-2003 format of ppt

Crawling content is sucessful incase of PPTX since Office 2007 uses New file formt called Office XML format which has lot of benefits one among them is effective search when compared to other previous MS office formats. Textbox content are also stored as part of XML which was not available in the previous formats.

Error : I was trying to activate the Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature through the ManageFeatures pages, but it threw me the access denied error. Fix : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm -o activatefeature -name PublishingResources -url http://website Run the above in the command prompt and then try activating the feature it will work, digging on the cause.. will post when I'm done.

I always use google maps to find directions, though its pretty easy over here in Calgary. Whenver I use the directions it'll always show the directions by car, indicating the duration and distance of travel, also indicating the one way. Often I'll take printout of that and draw a directions on my own since I don't have car and prefer walking most. Now Google maps introduced walking directions So my job has become simple now enter the addresses and proceed.

It has been great experience on the third day of the arrival here in Calgary, I have been to the Canada service centre to apply for new Social Insurance Number and they asked for the Work permit Which I dint had with me. And they told it has to be collected from the airport from the immigration at the time of arrival. I rushed to airport, and got into the immigration counter through the backdoor and explained the situation and then the officer provided the Work permit. It seems that its not new for them it , I got it from others its the responsibility of the visitors coming in work permit visa to collect the work permit. In the airport there's no clear indication of the immigration process. Totally a new experience, which I will never forget.

IT industry is purely Knowledge based industry, you are hired for the skills and technical expertise, and when people are not updated with the latest trends of technical advancements then they are out of business. They were certain period when our parents used to work for the same company till their life time having same routine of work. But now its changed completely, people wont stay more than few years with the same company citing several reasons for the change, lack of technical exposure, compensation, work pressure and manager. Technical exposure is one of the main concern of many people, since it also plays the vital role in the competing in this sort of play if I'm not getting technical exposure over here and then in my next assignments I'll be bullied in my future assignments that's very much true. Compensation its the main reason everyone works for money, if I'm not payed well then I should look for change. It goes like this Knowledge acquired converted into work and work should be converted into money. If any of these conversions fails then we are sure into trouble. Work pressure its also due to either lack of technical expertise or incorrect estimations. There are several ways to override these situations of pressure. Added AJAX feed control to this newly updated blog template . I was trying to develop the same in RIA using flex 3.0, but embedding swf with the template will make the loading process slow. Now used javascript based AJAX dynamic feed control. Which will load recent 16 entries by reading the RSS feed of any site. Still more tweaks can be made to it, inorder to look like RIA.

Congrats to Dhoni's men for the historic win over the ozzzz. Men in blue has given a sweet revenge for all the Monkey business and surveillance camera activities. Its a farewell day for Gilchrist, not a very good one for him though. We will surely miss his actions in ODI format of cricket. The wicketkeeper batsman is known for his professionalized cricket, which is not seen in the rest of the team. But he'll sure bring feast in IPL clashes. Back in home, now its the decision time for the BCCI, to make right decisions. We have bundle of talents now in all direction, mostly from the young blood. We need to give them oppurtunities to perform and to shine.

Here is the first post under the category 'Error
and Fix' and it goes like this...

Error : Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.

Scenario : I was using Visual studio 2005 with webpart extensions, created a custom webpart and added some snippet in the Render override method, and F6, build is successful when tried to deploy i was facing the error (see the screenshot).

Fix : Goto the project properties and inside the debug tab select the start action as 'start browser with url' and enter the valid site collection url. Please check the site collection before you use it over here.

Please note this same error message can occur in other cases also, since its a
generic error message shown by the system when authorization fails. In that case
this fix might not help.

I was thinking from a while of raising a blog series to address some of the issues faced by me during development, and this the time for that. I will try my best to post most of them.
These posts will be having a issue and its solution. And I named this category as 'Error and Fix' all posts will be tagged under this category.
Currently involved in MOSS 2007 development, so most of them will be from this side.

It was really a busy week for me. Lot of issues, lot of fixes and final out come - gained some expertise in writing custom webpart for SharePoint. And the real fun is, it keeps my learning curve ticking..

Wax on Apple

Apple a day keeps doctor away, all like this fruit because of its rich vitamins and taste. Apple is known for its color. Lot of lyricist penned about this fruit in Tamil movies (Apple penne nee yaaro). Why I'm writing all this ... lemme come to the point.
A regular time in my house, I was browsing through my mails, One forwarded mail got my attention about applied wax on apple for preserving it for long duration.
That mail goes like this

Hi Friends,

this is a mail to inform you all that the wax coating on apple to preserve it for longer duration is very TRUE...one of my colleague has purchased an apple recently & just tried to check whether the wax coating was true & to her surprise it was true indeed. check the snaps that i took from my mobile.

the most surprising part is, it carries a sticker stating a number & 'product of US'...this mail is not to say anything against any country ,but to pass on the info that there are apples in the market which are coated with wax...so better Beaware!!!

When I turned aside, I saw similar Apple in our dinning table. So I decided to test the integrity of the fruit, to my surprise it was waxed .

I took video also with my mobile, but I had taken it using one hand so it might not be so clear.

After taking video, fruit looked like this

But Usapple.org says

Waxes have been used on fruits and vegetables since the 1920s. They are all made from natural ingredients, and are certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be safe to eat

But why to have a risk, lets have indian apples. Looking through my window, that apple is sailing is way to the bin.
